One day. One beach. Three ways to show up.

Ahead of World Cleanup Day on 20 September, join Mayekoo at Ananse Beach, Nungua, on Saturday, 19 September for a major coastal cleanup tackling plastic waste and marine debris along Ghana's shoreline.

Volunteer on the beach. Bring your organization. Or help fund the equipment, waste haul-off and field operations that turn a day of action into ongoing coastal restoration.

Support the operation

Help power the cleanup — and the work that follows.

Your contribution supports the practical work behind coastal restoration: mechanized cleanup, volunteer supplies, waste collection and haul-off, field logistics and the return cleanups that help reduce plastic waste and marine debris along the shoreline after World Cleanup Day.

The Day

More than a cleanup day. A full-scale operation.

World Cleanup Day brings people around the world together to take action against waste and the wider problem of ocean pollution. Mayekoo will mark it on Saturday, 19 September 2026, with a major cleanup at Ananse Beach, Nungua — one of the active sites in our ongoing coastal restoration work.

Starting at 7:00 AM, Mayekoo crews, volunteers and partners will work side by side along the shoreline. Our industrial beach rake and tractor will operate alongside volunteers to remove plastic waste, marine debris and other accumulated coastal waste, with collected material coordinated for haul-off from the site.

Individuals, students, families, community groups and corporate teams are all welcome.

Why Ananse Beach

We removed 342 metric tonnes in three days. Then we kept coming back.

Earlier in 2026, Mayekoo's initial three-day intervention at Ananse Beach removed 342 metric tonnes of waste, restored approximately 900 metres of shoreline, and mobilized 121 volunteers.

Then we came back. And kept coming back.

One major cleanup cannot solve a persistent flow of coastal waste. Plastic pollution, marine debris and other waste continue to reach the shoreline through drains, runoff, illegal dumping and tidal movement — contributing to the wider problem of ocean pollution long after an event ends.

That is why Mayekoo has committed to sustained restoration work at Ananse Beach — combining regular mechanized cleanups, coordinated waste haul-off, community participation and local partnerships over a one-year period.

World Cleanup Day is one important moment in that work. It is not the end of it.

World Cleanup Day 2025 — Laboma Beach

Last World Cleanup Day, Mayekoo and its partners brought together more than 500 volunteers at Laboma Beach and removed over 16 metric tonnes of waste in a single day.

In 2026, we are bringing that same combination of people, equipment and partners to Ananse Beach — while continuing the longer-term restoration work already underway there.

What your donation funds

The work behind a cleaner shoreline.

Ocean cleanup is not one action. It takes equipment, people, logistics and repeated work to remove coastal waste and keep plastic pollution and marine debris from simply accumulating again.

01

Mechanized cleanup

Fuel, operators and maintenance for Mayekoo's beach rake and tractor, which help remove larger volumes of accumulated plastic waste, marine debris and compacted coastal waste than volunteers can reasonably clear by hand alone.

02

Coordinated waste haul-off

Cleanup only works if collected waste leaves the shoreline. Your support helps cover the trucks, containers and waste-management coordination required to move material off-site after it is collected.

03

Volunteer supplies & field logistics

Gloves, bags, water, first aid, site coordination and other practical resources help volunteers work safely and effectively on the day.

04

The return cleanups

Ocean and coastal pollution do not stop after World Cleanup Day. Your support also helps Mayekoo return to active sites as waste accumulates again, protecting progress and extending the impact beyond a single event.

How you can take part

Support the work on the ground.

You do not have to be standing on Ananse Beach to be part of the cleanup.

Your contribution helps support ocean and coastal cleanup operations, equipment, waste collection and haul-off, volunteer materials, field logistics and the return work needed as plastic waste and marine debris accumulate again.

Proof of Work

We show the work. Not just the mission.

Every Mayekoo coastal operation is documented through field photography, project updates and location data. World Cleanup Day 2026 will be documented the same way.

Whether you donated, volunteered or partnered with us, you will be able to see what happened on the ground and what your participation helped make possible.

About Mayekoo

We don't just fund coastal cleanup. We help deliver it.

Mayekoo is a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity that works with vetted local partners to fund and help deliver social-impact projects across Africa.

For coastal restoration, that means being involved in the work itself. We coordinate equipment deployment, waste haul-off and field logistics to address plastic waste, marine debris and other shoreline pollution. We work alongside contractors, local organisations, community partners and volunteers. And we document what happens so supporters can see the work being delivered on the ground.

Learn About Mayekoo

With Mayekoo, your World Cleanup Day support helps fund:

  • Mechanized coastal cleanup operations that remove waste at scale
  • Coordinated haul-off that moves collected waste away from the shoreline
  • Volunteer supplies and well-run field operations
  • Return cleanups that help protect progress after the event
  • Field reporting that shows supporters what happened on the ground

Where does the collected waste go?

Mayekoo coordinates waste haul-off with waste-management partners so collected material can be removed from the shoreline as part of the cleanup operation.

Why does Mayekoo use heavy equipment?

On heavily polluted shorelines, volunteer cleanup alone cannot always remove the volume of accumulated or compacted waste present. Mayekoo combines volunteers with mechanized equipment so the operation can address both visible litter and larger concentrations of waste at a more meaningful scale.

How does a beach cleanup help address ocean pollution?

Removing plastic waste and marine debris from the shoreline reduces material that can remain in the coastal environment or be carried back into the ocean by tides and runoff. Cleanup is one part of the solution, which is why Mayekoo combines it with repeated restoration work, waste haul-off, community participation and local partnerships.

How will I know what the cleanup accomplished?

Mayekoo documents its coastal work through photographs, field updates, location data and project results. World Cleanup Day 2026 results will be added to this page and Mayekoo's project reporting after the cleanup.

One day brings us together. The work continues after it.
