Help Build Tenashie School's Creative Space & Library

Help turn one night into 52 weeks of creativity, reading and learning.

At Tenashie, the challenge is not getting children interested. it is making sure the space, books and materials are still there when they come back next week.

The school's clubs need a dedicated place of their own and not whichever classroom happens to be free that day. They need books children can borrow, art supplies that last beyond a few sessions, and tools that allow the environmental club to work in its own neighbourhood.

Most school clubs here do not stall for lack of interest. They stall when the paper runs out in October.

We are raising $20,000 to change that. The funds will support three things.

• First, the space. A dedicated creative area and library at Tenashie, giving the clubs a room they can rely on and a place where books, materials and equipment can remain ready for use.
• Second, the materials. Shelving and a growing collection of books. Art supplies stocked for the year. Tools and storage for the environmental club.
• Third, the programming. The week-to-week resources that allow each club to have its own day and operate consistently.

The reading club already shows why that matters. Thursday is reading-club day. Children know when it happens. They know where to go. Consistency turns an activity into part of school life.

The art club is the next piece to put in place. AWO has committed its community artists to give their time and skills on a continuing basis, rather than coming in for a single session. The people who can run the program are ready. What is still needed is the room, the materials and the resources to make that commitment work week after week.

Ako Adjei Lit Up helps bring the community behind that effort.

For five years, the street and art festival has brought neighbours, artists, businesses and visitors together around the culture of the community and the needs within it. On September 25, the children of Tenashie will open the evening by showing some of what they have made and learned.

But the festival is one night.

This campaign is about the other 364 days.

It is about a child knowing there will still be books on the shelf next Thursday. That the art materials will not disappear after the first few sessions. That there is a room where the club belongs. And that the people who promised to show up will have what they need to keep showing up.
