Help Mayekoo & Volunteers Restore Accra’s Polluted Beaches and Save Marine Life
Accra’s coastal plastic and textile pollution is a volume problem that’s driven by fast fashion and single use plastics. Each year, ~111,000–225,000 tonnes of used clothing and textiles enter Ghana. At Ghana’s largest used clothing market, roughly 15 million garments arrive every week, many packed into large bales. As much as 40% is unsellable, becoming waste that is dumped, burned, or washed to sea. At the same time, a surge of single use plastics overwhelms limited infrastructure. Resulting in trash-choked coastlines, polluted waterways, damaged fisheries & marine eco system, stressed tourism, and rising public health risks.
This is where Mayekoo steps in.
Mayekoo (Project Andiamo Foundation) is a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity with an office in Accra, Ghana. We field trained crews with safety discipline, mobilize volunteers and communities to clean up coastal areas with mechanized equipment. We turn evidence from our cleanup efforts into advocacy but most importantly, we run the work.
What’s already in motion:
- We’ve purchased and deployed a tractor and a heavy-duty mechanized beach rake (Barber HD-600) to clear heavy debris along stretches of Accra’s coastline.
- We run recurring cleanups with residents, schools, and businesses, collecting waste-type and site data every time.
- We coordinate haul-off with public agencies and utilities so cleaned beaches don’t re-accumulate trash.
What your gift does next:
Scale more mechanized cleanups, equip more volunteers, and install on-beach facilities (durable sorting bays, bins, restrooms/hand-wash) so clean becomes the norm. We publish monthly dashboards and audit-ready closeouts so you can see exactly what you funded.
The Challenges
- Textile flood: ~111k–225k tonnes/year of used clothing; ~15M garments/week arrive in Accra; up to 40% becomes waste.
- Plastic surge: Single-use bottles, sachets, and packaging blanket beaches after storms.
- Infrastructure gap: Without sorting bays, bins, and restrooms, beaches re-accumulate trash and volunteers can’t operate at scale.
- Human costs: Fisheries suffer; degradation of marine ecosystems; tourism suffers; flood risk rises as drains clog.
Why It Matters (community impact)
Clean beaches protect health, restore biodiversity, and stabilize livelihoods. Fisherfolk bring up fish, not fabric. Vendors see foot traffic return. Families reclaim the coast with dignity and pride. your support empowers advocates, volunteers and communities fighting every day for a healthier ocean.
The Plan
What your donation funds: funds raised will help Mayekoo scale and lead coastal restoration efforts including the purchase of additional mechanized equipment for cleanups, engage more volunteers, and build public facilities, with transparent reporting.
Immediate
- Run more manual and mechanized beach cleanups with our current tractor + Barber HD-600 beach rake
- Equip volunteers with PPE + tools and safety training
- Install durable sorting bays and high-capacity bins at priority beaches
Mid-Term
- Buy additional equipment and increase frequency of cleanups (fuel, maintenance, targeted attachments)
- Launch community monitoring teams and youth engagement days
- Formalize haul-off schedules with the city and recyclers
Long-Term
- Maintain steady cadence of mechanized + manual cleanups
- Add restrooms/hand-wash for sustained cleanliness and volunteer safety
- Publish monthly dashboards (tons removed, textile share, diversion %, volunteers, before/after)
We need to act now. The longer we wait, the more irreversible the damage becomes.
Every donation is a lifeline—for the fishermen, the children, the sea turtles, and the communities who call these shores home. Your support helps us reclaim our beaches, restore dignity, and spark a wave of hope across the country. Yedase paa (Thank you deeply).
Transparency Promise
We pledge to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability. Every contribution will be diligently tracked, with regular updates on our progress and detailed reports on how your donations are making a difference.
