Trash is a real problem along Accra’s coastline. It shows up on beaches, in fishing nets, and in blocked drains.

The manual work volunteers do matters — and always will. But the volume of waste has outgrown manual cleanup alone. Trash returns within days, and without a consistent mechanized cleanup and coordinated haul-off, the problem only gets worse.

The Need

These beaches are where people live, work, commute, trade, fish, gather, and earn a living. When plastic and discarded textile waste pile up, the damage is immediate and personal.

Fishing nets come back tangled with trash instead of fish.
Blocked drains worsen flooding and standing water in nearby communities.
Families avoid beaches that were once shared public spaces.
Vendors and tourism operators lose income when shorelines look like dumping grounds.

What’s needed now is consistent, mechanized cleanup capacity, paired with volunteer and community action — so beaches stay clean after each cleanup day ends.

What We’ve Already Done

Before asking for public support, Mayekoo committed real funds and operational capacity. This is not a pilot. It’s an active operation.

• Invested over $100,000 upfront to purchase a 4WD tractor and a Barber HD-600 mechanized beach rake, designed to remove heavy debris at scale
  
  
• Established regular cleanups with volunteers, schools, and local community members
  
  
• Coordinated trash haul-off with haulers so collected waste leaves the beach for good
