Help Restore Ghana’s Beaches and Coastline

Ghana’s beaches should be places where people can gather, work, fish, play, and take pride in their communities—not places overwhelmed by plastic, discarded textiles, and other waste.

Across parts of Accra’s coastline, waste moves through streets, drains, waterways, and coastal communities before collecting along the shore or entering the ocean. Limited waste infrastructure, illegal dumping, poor drainage, and inadequate collection all contribute to a problem that no single cleanup can solve.

Mayekoo is helping address that challenge through regular, coordinated beach cleanup and coastal restoration work. We bring together community volunteers, local partners, cleanup crews, and equipment to remove waste from affected beaches and make sure what is collected is properly hauled away.

Our approach combines people and machinery. Volunteers collect and sort waste, reach areas equipment cannot, and help build community awareness. Mayekoo’s HD-600 beach rake and tractor help remove larger volumes of waste and lift debris buried in the sand. For larger operations, we coordinate heavy equipment, dumpsters, trucks, and registered local waste-removal companies.

The goal is not a one-day cleanup. It is sustained action that helps keep waste from returning to the shoreline and entering the ocean.

Cleaner beaches matter for marine life, but they also matter for the people who live and work along the coast. Fishing communities, local vendors, families, and other coastal residents all benefit when public beaches are safer, cleaner, and more usable.

Waste reaching Ghana’s coastline is the result of a larger system of plastic pollution, textile waste, illegal dumping, poor drainage, limited collection, and inadequate public waste infrastructure.

Once that waste reaches the shore, it can damage coastal habitats, threaten marine life, make public beaches unsafe and unusable, and affect the people whose livelihoods depend on the coast.

This coordinated model allows volunteers, equipment operators, local partners, and waste-removal providers to do different parts of the job while working toward the same outcome: remove waste from the coastline and make sure it is properly taken away rather than left to return to the beach or ocean.
