What It Takes to Show Up for a Coastline

What It Takes to Show Up for a Coastline

When people see the final photos from a beach cleanup, they usually notice the cleared shoreline.

What they do not always see is what it takes to get there.

At Chorkor–Chemuena and Ananse Beach, coastal restoration meant more than picking up visible litter. It meant heavy-duty equipment, stockpiled waste, difficult terrain, shifting tides, hauling logistics, and volunteers who still showed up to be part of the work.

It also meant something more human: people choosing not to turn away from a problem that had built up for years.

Across both interventions, more than 421 volunteers were mobilized in support of restoration efforts. Their presence mattered not only because of what they removed by hand, but because they brought energy, visibility, and public commitment into spaces that too often go ignored.

Community action does not replace systems. But it gives those systems strength, momentum, and legitimacy.

At Mayekoo, we believe restoration works best when machinery, planning, and community participation move together.
