Help Girls in South Sudan Build Confidence Through Skateboarding

The first challenge is learning to stand on the board.

Then comes balance. Falling. Getting back up. Trying again while other girls watch, laugh, encourage you, and eventually take their own turn.

Women Relief Aid introduced skateboarding as a rare recreational and confidence-building opportunity for girls in South Sudan. What began with donated boards and safety gear quickly drew more interest, showing that girls wanted a space where they could move, learn a new skill and be visible in a sport that is still heavily male-dominated.

Coaches describe a change that goes beyond skating. Girls who were hesitant to speak have grown more comfortable expressing themselves and speaking in front of others.

This fundraiser helps the program grow without losing what makes it valuable: a supportive group, real coaching, proper equipment and a safer place to practice.

Sport creates a different route into confidence.

Skateboarding asks participants to take manageable risks, practice in public, learn from falls and encourage one another. A consistent program can create friendships, physical activity, self-expression and a space where girls are expected to take up room rather than shrink from it.

Girls in South Sudan face limited access to safe recreational spaces and organized sports, alongside broader pressures that can restrict education, mobility and public participation.

A program can attract more girls than it has boards, safety equipment or suitable space to serve. Growing interest is positive—but only if the program can grow safely with it.

Donations support Women Relief Aid’s skateboarding program with the practical resources required to operate and expand responsibly.

Funds may support skateboards, helmets and protective gear, coaching, program logistics, safe practice-space improvements and—where a verified project scope is ready—development of dedicated skate features or space.

Women Relief Aid leads the program locally. The fundraiser should remain tied to the skateboarding initiative rather than becoming a general unrestricted description of all WRA activities.
