At Vakpo Medical Center, the people providing care already know their community. What they need is a facility that is better able to support the work they are being asked to do.
The center serves a rural area in Ghana’s Volta Region, where limited funding has left important parts of the facility in need of improvement. Staff continue to care for patients despite aging spaces, infrastructure gaps, and limited equipment.
This fundraiser supports a practical upgrade agenda: strengthen maternity and newborn-care areas, improve plumbing for reliable clean water, improve the laboratory and pharmacy, add needed equipment, and support safer patient transport.
The point is not to turn a rural clinic into something it is not. It is to help nurses, clinicians, administrators, mothers, babies, and families work within a safer, more functional care environment.
Every improvement should translate into something staff can actually use: a better room, working water, a more capable diagnostic or pharmacy space, the right equipment, or a way to move a patient when care is needed elsewhere.
Better infrastructure does not replace skilled clinicians—it gives them a safer platform from which to work.
Reliable water supports hygiene and infection control. Functional maternity and newborn areas support safer care. A stronger laboratory and pharmacy improve day-to-day clinical operations. Patient transport matters when a case requires care beyond what the center can provide.
The challenge
Rural medical facilities often operate with fewer resources while serving communities that have fewer alternatives.
At Vakpo, aging clinical spaces, water and plumbing needs, limited equipment, and transport constraints put additional pressure on staff. Maternity and newborn care are especially sensitive to the condition and reliability of the facility around them.
How the work happens
Donations support prioritized facility improvements identified for Vakpo Medical Center.
Current needs include maternity and newborn-care renovations and equipment, clean-water plumbing, laboratory and pharmacy improvements, medical equipment, and ambulance/patient-transport capacity. Mayekoo’s role is to help mobilize resources and support accountable delivery with the local facility and partners.
Funding should follow verified scope and readiness rather than a generic hospital wish list.
