Help UniMAC Students Build a Reading Centre at Tenashie

Tenashie already has children who want to read. The next step is giving that habit a place to live.

Mayekoo’s literacy work at the school has put storybooks into children’s hands and supported a reading club. UniMAC students are building on that foundation with a focused fundraiser for a reading centre at Tenashie A/B Primary School.

A reading centre is more than a stack of books. Books need shelves. Children need a place to sit, browse and return. Materials need to remain organized. Teachers and volunteers need a space that makes regular reading activity easier rather than harder.

This is the kind of student project where the outcome can be very tangible: a room or defined area that looks and works differently because the resources are there.

UniMAC students bring the campaign energy. Mayekoo and the school provide the connection to an existing literacy effort that can keep using the space after the fundraiser ends.

A dedicated reading space gives books a permanent role in school life.

Children know where to find them. Teachers and volunteers can organize reading sessions more easily. A visible reading centre also signals that reading is not an occasional event—it belongs in the weekly rhythm of the school.

Book donations can create a strong start, but access becomes harder to sustain when there is no dependable place to organize and use the collection.

Shared classrooms and limited storage can make reading activities inconsistent. Materials can be difficult to manage, and a club may depend on whatever space happens to be free.

Donations support the practical setup of a Tenashie reading centre.

Funds may support age-appropriate books, shelving and storage, tables or seating where required, learning materials, signage/organization, basic room preparation and the logistics needed to make the space functional.

The campaign should coordinate with Mayekoo’s broader Tenashie literacy work so resources complement the existing reading club rather than duplicate it.
