A book matters most when someone opens it.
That is the idea behind Mayekoo’s Community Literacy Improvement Program. The work is not simply about collecting books and leaving them at a school. It is about putting books into children’s hands, giving them reasons to come back to reading, and helping schools build routines around literacy.
At Tenashie A/B Primary School, Mayekoo and community partners brought 600 storybooks into the school and spent time reading with pupils. That moment was useful because the books did not arrive alone: volunteers sat down, shared stories and helped make reading visible and social.
The program is designed to grow from those moments into reading clubs, mini-libraries, volunteer reading activations and support for teachers.
A strong reading culture is built page by page, week by week. This fundraiser helps schools create more of those opportunities.
Reading confidence affects far more than language class. It shapes how children approach instructions, stories, science, mathematics and independent learning.
When books are available and reading becomes part of school life, children have more chances to practice, discover subjects they enjoy and build confidence with language.
The challenge
A child can be enrolled in school and still have limited access to books, quiet reading opportunities and sustained literacy support.
Where classroom resources are stretched, reading may compete with many other needs. A one-time book donation can help, but without organization, teacher support and repeated engagement, books can become an event rather than a habit.
How the work happens
Donations support a practical literacy model built around access and engagement.
Funds may support age-appropriate books, mini-library and storage needs, reading-club materials, volunteer reading activations, teacher support and the logistics required to move books into schools responsibly.
Mayekoo will continue to document where materials go and how literacy activities are being used, rather than treating the number of books collected as the only measure of success.
