Vakpo Medical Center
Vakpo medical center, Ghana
Vapko is a rural community located in the Volta Region of Ghana, approximately 100 miles outside the capital. And like many small rural communities, Vakpo’s population is generally overlooked for support compared to more urbanized areas in Ghana.
For the nearly 11,000 people who live in and around Vakpo, the lack of funding for their aging medical center continues to create inequities and obstacles for medical care. The result of which is devastatingly higher rates of critical illness and mortality.
For the administrators and staff at the Vakpo medical center, providing health care to patients and families living in and around Vakpo presents significant challenges, but comes with a sense of service and duty. The staff is deeply connected to the community and the patients they serve, and this relationship serves as their primary motivator.
While Ghana’s current supply of physicians falls short of the demand for care, investments to upgrade facilities like the Vakpo medical center can help counter this. Like many other rural areas, Vakpo experiences significant health inequities. But the staff here is committed to eliminating these inequities and improving access to care. And we’re committed to helping them do just that.
