Help UniMAC Students Take Action for Cleaner Beaches

Organization name: Mayekoo

We are Kerziah, Obed, Anyeley, Precious, Millicent, Pearl, Ebenezer, Blessing and Eugenia, Level 300 students at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC).

Together, we formed Clean Coast Alliance, a formally approved UniMAC student initiative, because we believe students should do more than talk about the problems affecting our communities. We should also use our skills, networks and time to help address them.

From mid-July through the end of November 2026, we will work in the field with Mayekoo once every week, helping to clean polluted beaches and raise awareness about the growing plastic and textile-waste crisis.

We are raising $4,000 to support this sustained program of coastal cleanup, volunteer participation and environmental advocacy.

We are not asking people to support work we are unwilling to do ourselves. We are committing our time, energy and creativity—and we are inviting you to join us.

The Challenge Reaching Our Coast

Plastic and textile waste are polluting rivers, beaches and oceans around the world.

Every year, an estimated 19–23 million tonnes of plastic waste enter aquatic ecosystems. The world also produces approximately 92 million tonnes of textile waste annually. Discarded clothing, synthetic fabrics, plastic packaging and other materials can remain in the environment for years, damage marine ecosystems and break down into microplastics.

Ghana’s coastline is part of this global crisis.

At Labadi and other polluted beaches, plastic bottles, food packaging, fabric, discarded clothing and mixed waste can accumulate along the shoreline. Some of this waste is left behind on the beach, while other materials travel through streets, drains and waterways before reaching the coast.

The effects go beyond how the beach looks. Coastal pollution can harm marine life, create unhealthy conditions, affect local livelihoods and reduce the safety and enjoyment of public spaces.

We know that nine students cannot solve this global problem alone. But we do not believe that the size of the problem should become an excuse for doing nothing.

What We Will Do

Beginning in July and continuing through the end of November, we will join Mayekoo’s beach cleanup work once a week.

Mayekoo’s approach combines mechanized cleanup, community action, coordinated waste removal and public awareness. Heavy equipment and beach-cleaning machinery help remove large volumes of accumulated waste, while volunteers support detailed cleanup, community participation and greater public visibility.

As students, we will contribute by:

  • Participating in weekly field cleanup activities
  • Helping remove plastic, textile and other waste
  • Mobilizing other students and volunteers
  • Using social media to raise awareness
  • Documenting the work through photography, video and storytelling
  • Supporting fundraising and campaign outreach
  • Sharing project updates and results with donors

We want to use what we are learning at UniMAC to do more than describe environmental problems. We want to communicate in ways that encourage people to care, participate and take responsibility for the places we share.

What We Hope to Learn and Share

Through this experience, we will develop practical skills in advocacy, fundraising and social media communication.

We will learn how to present an important cause honestly, invite people to support it and show donors the work their contributions are making possible.

We also hope to encourage more young people to see environmental action as something they can support through their own skills, networks and time.

Not everyone has access to cleanup equipment. Not everyone can be in the field every week. But everyone can contribute in some way—by volunteering, raising awareness, donating or sharing the campaign.

This project is our opportunity to begin with what we have and where we are.

How Your Donation Will Help

Our $4,000 fundraising goal will support weekly coastal cleanup and environmental-awareness activities from mid-July through the end of November 2026.

Donations will help Mayekoo provide and coordinate essential needs such as:

  • Cleanup tools and protective equipment
  • Heavy-duty bags and waste-collection supplies
  • Mechanized beach-cleaning operations
  • Transportation and coordinated waste haul-off
  • First-aid and volunteer safety supplies
  • Drinking water and basic field support
  • Volunteer mobilization and outreach
  • Environmental-awareness content
  • Project documentation and donor updates

All donations will be received and managed through Mayekoo and used to support the approved coastal-restoration work.

Throughout the campaign, we will share photographs, videos and field updates so that our supporters can follow our progress and see the work taking place.
