Humpat International School was founded in September 2013 in the small coastal town of Busua, Western Ghana. What began with only 13 students has grown into a thriving learning community of around 150 children today.

The school offers education from nursery through Basic 8, welcoming children from about 1½ to 14 years old. Each day, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., students engage in structured learning and play in a nurturing environment that emphasizes growth, curiosity, and respect.

Unlike government-funded schools in the area, Humpat International School operates independently, relying solely on modest school fees to sustain its operations. Despite financial constraints, the school provides a meal each day for every child, ensuring that no student goes hungry during learning hours.

Over the years, Humpat has become a pillar of the community — a place where children gain the confidence, skills, and values to shape a brighter future for themselves and their families.

The Challenges

Humpat International School runs entirely without government support, and to keep education accessible to low-income families, school fees remain very low. As a result, the school faces multiple challenges that directly affect daily teaching and learning:

  • Overcrowded classrooms: Some classes share the same space due to a shortage of rooms.

  • Low teacher salaries: Dedicated teachers often work for very little, making staff retention difficult.

  • Insufficient furniture: Many students share desks and chairs, while others sit on the floor.

  • Hot classrooms: Without fans, learning becomes extremely difficult during the dry season.

  • Limited learning materials: Textbooks, stationery, and teaching tools are in short supply.

  • Nursery space: The youngest learners need safer, better-equipped facilities.

  • Water challenges: Water must be fetched from a distance every day.

  • No proper kitchen: Meals are prepared without an adequate cooking area.

  • Sanitation: Only one toilet exists — and it needs repair.

  • No office or teachers’ room: Teachers lack a quiet space for preparation or rest.

  • No dining or play area: Children eat in classrooms or outside, with few recreational materials.

Despite these obstacles, the spirit of Humpat remains strong. Teachers show up daily with dedication, and children come eager to learn — proof that determination can thrive even under limited means.

Why It Matters

Education transforms lives — and Humpat International School is living proof.

For many children in Busua, the school represents more than academics; it’s a sanctuary of hope, safety, and growth. Here, students dream beyond their circumstances and build the confidence to chase those dreams.

The teachers at Humpat give their all, nurturing curiosity and courage in every student — even when resources are scarce. But for these efforts to continue making a lasting impact, the school urgently needs improvements in infrastructure and learning tools.

Your support matters deeply.
Every donation helps strengthen the foundations of learning, giving children the tools, comfort, and encouragement they need to succeed. By supporting Humpat, you’re not only improving classrooms — you’re investing in the future of Busua and in Ghana’s next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers.

Solution

Humpat International School has outlined three key priorities to create a better environment for learning and growth:

  • Build a New Classroom:
Constructing an additional classroom will reduce overcrowding and provide students with a more peaceful, focused learning space. Funds will be used to buy materials, pay local craftsmen, and create new opportunities for children who currently share limited space.
  • Install Ceiling Fans:
The intense heat during Ghana’s dry season makes concentration difficult. Installing fans will greatly improve comfort, allowing students and teachers to focus better and enjoy their time in class.

  • Provide Learning Materials:
Supplying new textbooks, stationery, and teaching aids will make lessons more interactive and effective. Students will be able to participate more actively, and teachers will have the resources to inspire creativity and deeper learning.

These immediate projects are the foundation of a bigger vision — one where Humpat International School continues to grow into a safe, well-equipped, and inspiring space for every child to learn, dream, and thrive.
