Support UNIMAC’s Adisua Foundation: Build a Fence to Protect Children at Papao Basic School
The Adisua Foundation, based in Accra, Ghana, is a child-focused non-profit organization dedicated to creating safe, inclusive, and nurturing environments where children can thrive. Guided by its philosophy of CARE — Caution, Attention, Responsibility, and E-solutions — Adisua works to safeguard children’s physical, emotional, and psychological well-being in schools across Ghana.
At Papao Basic School in the Abokobi District, 420 pupils face an unimaginable reality: their school shares an open boundary with a cemetery. With graves dug less than 20 yards from the classroom and burials conducted during school hours, children are forced to learn in constant fear. The situation is not only unsafe but profoundly traumatic.
Adisua Foundation is committed to transforming this unsafe environment into one where children feel protected, respected, and supported to learn without fear.
The Challenges
-
Unsafe Proximity to Cemetery: Graves are dug close to classrooms, and open pits are sometimes left unattended for days, creating a physical hazard.
-
Trauma and Fear: Burials take place during school hours, exposing children to distressing sights that disrupt learning and cause psychological harm. Many students avoid school altogether because of the cemetery.
-
Overcrowding and Infrastructure Failures: Classrooms often host 60+ pupils with broken furniture, unsafe electrical wiring, and damaged facilities.
-
Hygiene & Health Barriers: Poor sanitation, unreliable school feeding, and lack of an infirmary affect students’ health and attendance.
-
Vulnerable Groups at Higher Risk: Orphans, girls without menstrual health support, and child laborers are especially exposed to risk and exclusion.
At the root of this danger is the absence of a protective fence wall, which leaves children vulnerable to both physical harm and emotional trauma.
Why It Matters
This project will directly benefit over 420 children currently enrolled at Papao Basic School by:
-
Shielding them from danger: A secure fence wall will stop graves, burials, and intrusions from disrupting their safety and dignity.
-
Restoring confidence in education: Children will return to school without fear, improving attendance and academic focus.
-
Creating holistic well-being: Alongside fencing, improvements in sanitation, menstrual health support, and safe infrastructure will ensure an environment where all children can learn equally.
-
Empowering teachers and parents: Training in child protection and positive discipline will foster a culture of safety and respect.
The fence wall is more than bricks and mortar—it will serve as a symbol of protection, a visible sign that these children matter, their education matters, and their dignity matters.
