Help Rebuild Lives After the Kantamanto Fire - Support Now
On January 2, 2025, tragedy struck the heart of Accra. The Kantamanto Secondhand Clothing Market— one of the world's largest hubs for recirculated secondhand clothing and a lifeline for thousands—was engulfed in flames. Two-thirds of the market was destroyed, leaving behind devastation, despair, and over 8,000 individuals without livelihoods.
Kantamanto was more than a marketplace—it was a thriving ecosystem of creativity and resilience, sustaining over 30,000 people, including traders, upcyclers, food vendors, and artisans like Alhassan Fatawu. For years, Fatawu turned discarded fabrics into unique designs, giving secondhand materials new life. Today, everything he worked so hard to build—his merchandise, tools, and income—is gone.
For many, Kantamanto was their only source of income, a place where they earned just enough to live day to day. The fire has robbed them of their livelihoods, pushing families already living on the edge into deeper vulnerability. Children who accompanied their parents to the market now face an uncertain future as families struggle to provide even the basics.
Despite heroic efforts by the Ghana National Fire Service, deploying 13 fire trucks to combat the flames, the loss has been catastrophic. Goods worth millions of Ghanaian cedis have turned to ashes, leaving families grappling with insurmountable debts and no clear path forward.
Why Your Help is Critical
Kantamanto represents more than commerce; it’s a beacon of sustainability and resilience. By recirculating 25 million secondhand garments monthly, this market provides dignified work for thousands while championing an alternative to fast fashion.
Without swift action, thousands of families face ruin, children’s futures are at risk, and a vibrant hub of ingenuity may disappear forever. While government and local leaders have pledged support, much of this aid has yet to reach those in need.
