Donate to N-COPST: Secure Jobs and Licenses for Untrained Teachers
The National Council of Private School Teachers (N-COPST), based in Kumasi, Ghana, is a registered association dedicated to advancing the welfare, education, and professional development of private school teachers across Ghana. N-COPST not only advocates for fair conditions and growth opportunities for its members but also contributes to the development of private education in the country. In partnership with West End University College (affiliated with the University of Cape Coast), N-COPST is currently supporting untrained teachers to earn their Bachelor's Degrees in Education, a basic requirement to obtain a teacher's license in Ghana.
The Challenges
A significant number of Ghana’s private school teachers are non-professionals who lack formal teaching qualifications. With the introduction of mandatory teacher licensing by the Ghanaian government, these educators now face job insecurity, as their secondary school certificates do not qualify them for the license. Without intervention, many will lose their livelihoods. Despite earning minimal salaries that barely cover basic needs, these untrained teachers are committed to educating the nation’s children. Currently, N-COPST is offering education grants of GHS 1,000 about $100 per teacher to offset annual tuition fees of GHS 3,600 about $350 at West End University College. However, the need far outweighs the association's capacity, and additional funding is urgently required.
Why It Matters
By supporting this campaign, you are investing directly in the future of education in Ghana. Your donations will:
- Enable 50 untrained teachers to continue their education without the crippling stress of tuition fees.
- Help these teachers secure their teaching licenses, ensuring job security and professional recognition.
- Improve educational outcomes for thousands of children, particularly in under-resourced, rural schools.
- Empower teachers to gain financial stability, continue supporting their families, and reinvest in their communities.
- Strengthen Ghana’s education system by ensuring schools are staffed with qualified, licensed professionals.
Solution
N-COPST is seeking to raise $16,667 to cover one year’s tuition for 50 untrained teachers. Your donation will help provide:
- Annual tuition support for 50 teachers, allowing them to remain in school and on track for a degree.
- Ongoing professional development, including CPD training and mentorship, to build teaching capacity.
- Job retention support, ensuring these teachers remain valuable contributors to Ghana's educational landscape.
This campaign is about more than just education—it’s about safeguarding livelihoods, promoting equity, and ensuring every child in Ghana has access to qualified, passionate educators.
