Labadi Beach (and adjacent beaches) in Accra, Ghana, is at a critical turning point. For years, pollution from single-use plastics, storm drain runoff, and imported fashion waste has plagued the beach. This pollution isn’t just an eyesore; it is a direct threat to the local community, marine life, and public health. At Mayekoo, we have spent the last few years tirelessly organizing beach clean-up events, removing thousands of tons of trash from the shores. However, the problem has worsened, and the beach is now at a critical point where human efforts alone are no longer enough.

The waves constantly bring in new trash from the ocean, and the debris that accumulates requires mechanized intervention, such as the use of tractors towing beach rakes, which Mayekoo is now utilizing. Without immediate action, the consequences will be devastating—not just for the environment, but for the people whose lives depend on the health of the coastline.

The Challenges

The pollution problem at Labadi Beach is the result of several contributing factors:

  • Single-use plastics: Bottles, bags, and other plastic waste have littered the beach, harming marine life and damaging the coastline.
  • Storm drain runoff: Rainwater carries trash from surrounding areas to the beach, exacerbating the pollution issue.
  • Imported fashion waste: Discarded clothing and textiles, dumped along the coast, contribute to environmental degradation.
  • Inadequate waste management: Limited resources and infrastructure mean that effective solutions have yet to be implemented by the community.

What’s happening at Labadi Beach may seem like a local problem, but it has global implications. Pollutants from the beach flow into the ocean, contributing to marine biodiversity loss and the plastic pollution crisis affecting oceans worldwide. Moreover, the destruction of coastal ecosystems contributes to climate change by reducing natural carbon sequestration and destabilizing weather patterns.

Why It Matters

The pollution here doesn’t just affect Ghana; it’s part of a larger, worldwide issue. The oceans connect us all, and when a beach like Labadi becomes overwhelmed by waste, it adds to the global marine pollution crisis. Protecting this beach means taking a stand for marine biodiversity, climate action, and the future of coastal communities everywhere.

Your support will:

  • Restore Labadi Beach, making it safe and beautiful again for locals, visitors, and marine wildlife.
  • Protect marine ecosystems, preventing the further degradation of ocean biodiversity.
  • Empower the local community with sustainable waste management practices and create jobs related to environmental conservation.
  • Support global climate action by preserving coastal ecosystems that help capture and store carbon.
